Rifle Repeater Site (146.985 Mhz)

Rifle Repeater Site (146.985 Mhz)

The 146.985 Mhz repeater is located atop the Anvil Points about seven miles west of Rifle, near Rulison at an elevation of 8,729 feet. This repeater has coverage as far west as Canyonlands, Utah, northwest to Vernal, Utah, south to the Elk Mountains, and east to Vail at its extremes. Normal coverage is from Glenwood Springs to just east of the Utah border. It is one of our best performers, with such an ideal location.

The repeater is a GE Master II with a GE Custom MVP VHF link transceiver. This site has separate antennas for transmit and receive and has no duplexers. Band pass and band reject filters, along with the separate antennas provide isolation between the input and output signals. A Link Communications RLC-1 controller is used at this site. There is no AC power and DC power is generated through a combination of solar panels and a small wind generator, then stored in heavy duty golf cart batteries. The signal links to the Leadville site via a 5 element VHF yagi antenna.

Access to this site is available via 4 wheel drive from mid June through mid October. There has only been one successful trip to the Rifle site during winter months, although several aborted attempts have been made.

Beginning the 25 mile trip up the cliffs north of Rifle. Not for the feint of heart! A sharp switchback through a beautiful cut in the side of the cliff near the top of the mesa. The repeater site is another 10-15 miles west, along the back of the Anvil Points road. The road seems to go forever. Many elk hunters find a wealth of game in this area in the fall!
This is a view of the backside of one of the Anvil Points. A sharp cliff is just below this view. John (N5EHP) in front of the old GE Master Royal repeater. It died from a lightning strike! The receive antenna is atop the short tower. Transmit antenna is out of view on the 60' tower. Andy Ferris (KBØPOL) standing next to the yagi link antenna above a sharp cliff.
The repeater resides just to the left of center on the hill. A good view of the solar panels, with John (N5EHP) in the foreground. Three dimensional map of Anvil Points and the surrounding area. Approximate coverage area of the Rifle repeater.
